Trying to find Curly Girl Method Approved Hair Care? The Curly Girl Method (or CGM for short) is a method for those with curly hair (not just limited to girls, despite the name!) that has not been chemically relaxed. Those with naturally curly or wavy hair follow this method of hair care, carefully choosing which cleansers and conditioners they use depending on a variety of reasons.

Why should I be avoiding certain products with my Curly Hair?

Things like mineral oils and petroleum can weigh down curls, making them look dull, frizzy and unmanageable. Typically, those following the Curly Girl Method will only invest in products that are free of Sulphates, Alcohol, Fragrances, Parabens and that are non-water soluble. The list also includes avoiding Combs and Brushes and applying heat in any form to your hair (so turn down the heat on the hairdryer!).

Those following CGM quite commonly follow one final rule. The No Poo Method, meaning, no shampoos. When you shampoo your hair you’re stripping your hair of the natural oils created by your scalp to care for your hair, causing the scalp to over produce excess oils, in turn, making your hair look greasy and oily in a few days time after the original wash. You then wash your hair, stripping these oils again and the cycle begins again.

The No Poo Method promoted avoiding using Shampoo’s completely, instead recommending that you wash your hair with only Conditioner and Water 1-2 times a week, especially if you follow the Curly Girl Method. Of course, it’s understood that you sometimes can’t go completely cold turkey on Shampoo, sometimes people feel it leaves their hair too greasy, or it looks unprofessional to completely cut out the shampoo all together, so it’s recommended to go low-poo, using low-sulphate shampoos, or just to cut down your use of shampoo over time.

Tree Bee Lemon & Honey Shampoo is absolutely low-poo, containing zero parabens, damaging oils or any other ingredients that normal Shampoo’s contain making them non – Curly Girl Method Approved.

Which products are Curly Girl Method Approved?

With the Curly Girl Method it’s recommended that you only use two products, conditioner and hair gel (but, also go low-poo if that’s your chosen method!). Products that you want to avoid if trying to follow the Curly Girl Method will contain the following;

  • Sulphates (SLS’s)
  • Silicones
  • Waxes
  • Drying alcohols

Sulphates are included in products to give your shampoo a lather, but in Curly hair can strip the hair completely of natural oils that are key to beautiful bouncing curls! They can dry out your curls and cause frizz. Silicones are often found in Conditioners more than they are in Shampoo and work by coating the hair, preventing moisture from entering the hair, which is also a cause of frizzy hair and dry hair. Silicones are also non-water soluable and are only removed by Sulphates – you can quickly see how damaged curly hair can get by being caught in a cycle of washing with Sulphates and conditioning with Silicones!

Waxes act in a very similar way to Silicones, coating the hair, preventing moisture from entering and causing dry, frizzy hair. Drying alcohols do exactly what it says on the label, dries your hair out.

Tree Bee Grapefruit & Orange Natural Hair Conditioner is free of Sulphates, Silicones, Waxes, Parabens and contains only Cetearyl Alcohol – a Curly Girl Method Approved alcohol which doesn’t dry your hair.
